本校が取り組む「BIWAKO TIME」(以下, BT)は, 全国に先駆けて実施され, 34年の歴史を持ち, 全校体制で取り組んでいる総合学習である。時代とともに少しずつ修正と改善を重ねながら現在に至り, 「郷土である滋賀」を学習フィールドとし, 「学び方を学ぶ」調査研究型の学習を継続している。34年間の本校の卒業生に, BTで身につけた力が卒業後, どのように生きて働く力として活用できているかを調査することで, 総合学習をどう取り組み, どうアクティブ・ラーニングを進めておくと, 生徒たちの将来にとってどのような力が身につくのかを示すことができると考え, 本研究に着手した。調査対象である34年間の卒業生から, 各学年20名程度抽出した。抽出者には質問紙に返信用封筒を同封して送付した。有効回答率は23.3%となった。また, 質問紙調査で協力できると回答した卒業生等, 条件が適した人に対して聞き取り調査を行い, より詳しく把握した。調査の結果, 卒業生がBTを通して身についたと感じている力のうち, 主に2つは, 調査上分類した3つの世代ともに共通だった。その1つは, グループで取り組むなかで仲間とともに自主的・自立的に課題に取り組めるようになり, コミュニケーションカがついたことである。もう1つは, 探究的学習活動のプロセスに関する情報収集・活用能力である。しかし, 世代ごとに違う傾向も見られた。下の世代は, 教員により論理的な探究学習を求められてきたため, 情報収集・活用能力が身についたと感じている傾向がとくに強い。中の世代は, 学習時間を他の世代よりも多くかけて丁寧な学習を行ったため, 主体性や自由性を身に付けてきた。上の世代は, 限られたBTの学習時間の中で, 主体的に工夫して学習していた。郷土への関心やよりよい社会にしていこうとする意欲, 環境問題への関心が高かった。当時の教員の課題意識や指導の重点によって, 身に付いた力に世代ごとの違いが生じていることがわかった。
