Physical and Linguistical Understanding. The Problem of Language in Plessner, Gadamer, Apel and Habermas

The aim of this research project is to work out different approaches to the problem of language in german speaking postwar philosophy. It has to examine its historic as well as systematic development ("Problemgeschichte") within the period from 1945 to 1970 and should also allow to take reference to previous intellectual constellations. This should be done with regard to those authors mentioned (in the working title) just like to other philosophical authors operating at the same period. Following from their particular dealing with the problem of language, the challenge is to reconstruct the decisive course-settings in its discoursive and contemporary historical context that leads to the linguistic turn.
