当研究は、第2次世界大戦中中立国ポルトガルが領有した東ティモールに、電撃侵攻したオーストラリア軍が、完全撤退するまでの1年余(1941年12月17日〜1943年1月)の「戦争」に関するオーストラリアの記憶を検証し、その記憶がどのように形成されたかを解明することを目指している。調査は、オーストラリアを中心に、元兵士の記憶を引き出すための資料収集として戦争の「舞台」であった東ティモールの現地調査も行った。主な調査は、元兵士(パース、シドニー)また第2次世界大戦期の東ティモール経験者(パース)およびその関係者(シドニー)に行った面接聞き取り調査であった。また、記憶に影響を与えたと考えられるオーストラリアと東ティモールの関係を知る上で、東ティモール研究者Kevin Sherlock(ダーウィン),Paul Cleary(キャンベラ)と面接を行うと伴に、オーストラリアの東ティモール研究の中心C. Darwin UniversityのProf. Alan Powell、 Dr. Steven Farramとも面接した。また、文献資料調査も同時に行い、戦友会の会報(第2/2中隊戦友会、第2/4戦友会)や元兵士の回想録といった戦後の資料を中心に収集した。これらの調査から、戦友会誌は単に戦争の回想録や近況報告が掲載されているわけではなく東ティモールとオーストラリアの関係についても言及していることが、記憶の変容に大きなかかわりがあるのではと判明した。また、オーストラリア元兵士の多くが未だに現在の東ティモールの状況に興味を示していることは、戦争中クリアード(道案内兼下男)の東ティモール人と個人的な関係を持っていたことにも起因しているのではと考えた。戦友会誌や過去の個人的な関係が、現在に至るまでその地域の興味を維持させ、その記憶にも影響を与えていることが解明されつつある。
