本研究は、日本に現存する幕末来港英国船作製「七尾港図」の内容と背景を調べ、その謎に迫る教科「総合」の教材作成を目的としている。(1) 「七尾港図」の内容と背景の探求は、初期の目標を超えることができた。具体的には、『七尾港図」の海図としての特徴を明らかにし、記載経度の精度を調査し日英の経度測定法を比較した。また現地調査を実施し、来航した英国人の測量行為や応対する日本人の振る舞いなどを明らかにした。そして、慌ただしい幕末になされた測量の政治的な意義を、英国と日本の双方の立場から調べ、英国作製海図と伊能忠敬図との関連性なども明らかにできた。更に、英国作製海図を訳写した人物についても、その経歴等を明らかにした。(2) 教科「総合」の教材作りについては上記の解明が予想以上に進み、構成内容を取捨選択すれば幾つかのパターンで作成可能となった。この内容は、数学や天文学を始め測量や外交などの知見を得て、英国測量船と沿岸住民の織りなすドラマの中に潜入する知的冒険の旅となる。その刺激に満ちた旅は、生徒達に自然と社会を総合した世界観を獲得させることにつながる。様々な探求結果が拡散的とならぬよう、最後はコンパクトに仕上げたい。2009年8月の日数協の全国大会(京都)で「女王陛下の海図で幕末探検!?」と題して、研究発表する予定である。
