本研究は、選択授業(2・3年生合同)の場で行ったものである。大学・地理学教室と本校が連携し、GISを利用し、野外調査能力の向上を志向する地域社会貢献型カリキュラムを開発・実施した。フィールドとしては、本校周辺の平野区である。様々な地理的事象(とくに地域の交通安全)に着目し、GISソフトを活用して、地図化し、評価・分析しながら、問題を発見し、解決方法を検討させた。具体的な成果・課題としては、以下の通りである。(1)大学と協同した学習プログラムを構成することができた。とくに、大学生、大学教官が収集したデータ(開発した教材)を中学生が利用することができ、データ分析に多くの時間をかけることができ、野外調査能力の向上につながった。(2)地域を歩いて観察するだけでなく、収集したデータをGISで編集し、加工することにより、より精緻な分析が可能になった。例えば、大学生が収集したデータ(道路幅データ・人口動態等)と生徒が調べたデータ(通行量、外灯の分布当)を重ね合わせることで多面的、多角的な分析が可能になった。(3)ArcGISは、中学生にとって、高度な操作が必要である。「GIS活用マニュアル」を配布したところ、比較的スムーズにデータを入力したり、分析したりすることができた。(4)地域の危険箇所を早期に発見するための視点を仮説的に設定し、調査を通して検証することは時間の関係で進めなかった。また、データ量が多すぎると分析に時間を要する。ある程度、データ量を絞りこむことで、分析力、野外調査能力も高まっていくと考える。今後、地域理解をいっそう進め、持続可能な社会を実現していくためにも、グローバルイシューに対する関心を高めローカルな足場からコミュニティへの参加・貢献を促していくものと考える。とくに貧困問題に焦点化し、地域課題を発見するための学習プログラムを開発し、試行している。
