1.ゴーヤ鉢植えキットについて府中市の小中学校、教育委員会、府中市のボランティア団体(府中PFS)並びに東京農工大学FSセンターでゴーヤプロジェクトを行っている。農工大でゴーヤの苗を作り、府中市の幼稚園、小中学校計36校に苗を配布した。また、蔓を這わせるため、パイプと網で棚を作り2階まで届く大がかりの仕掛けを作成している。しかし、設置や撤去に労力がかかるので簡単に出来ないかとの要望があり、ゴーヤを身近に観察できる鉢植え栽培ユニット「ツリー状仕立てのゴーヤ鉢植えポット」を試作した。プラスチック鉢に支柱を立て、そこに蔓を這わせた。果実の収穫も複数回行え、子どもが身近にゴーヤを楽しむには十分に効果があると思われた。また、鉢植えを並べてグリーンカーテンにしたが、風で倒れやすいのと、2mの高さではグリーンカーテンとしては少し高さが足りないことから、教室内の窓際に置いて観察と日陰の効果をねらうのに適していると考えられと。2.ゴーヤ栽培のための安全チェックシートの作成栽培管理のしおりと安全チェックシートを配布した。作業中にケガや事故を未然に防ぎ、安全に対する知識を高めてもらうためのものである。植え付け作業時に立ち会い、チェックシートの効果を検証した。安全に作業を進めるためには有効であった。3.ゴーヤ通信、ホームページの作成ゴーヤの栽培指針やゴーヤを身近に感じてもらうための情報発信として、ゴーヤ通信、ゴーヤホームページを作成した。4.ゴーヤを知るための観察指導先述の鉢植えゴーヤを用いて、ノートPCとデジタル顕微鏡を組み合わせ、雄花と雌花の違いや、まきひげ、茎、葉の特徴を観察させた。府中市立図書館主催の小学生向けの公開講座において検証した。花や葉、茎、根の役割を考えて、学習を進めるものであった。ゴーヤの果実を実際に手で取り、でこぼこや毛が生えている様子が観察できて、子どもたちも喜び大変好評を博した。
