○研究目的本研究は、開拓使の魚類標本を対象として、その現存状況および標本情報の確認・追加・修正を試み、今後の研究の基礎情報を整備することを目的とした。○研究方法開拓使の標本を所蔵する北大植物園・博物館(北大)、市立函館博物館(函博)、東京国立博物館(東博)および国立科学博物館(科博)について、明治期の台帳類の調査・整理を行ったうえで、標本の現存状況を調査するとともに、現存している標本の付属ラベルの記載情報の確認、製作方法・材料などの標本学的調査をあわせて行った。○研究成果北大標本:古記録調査の結果、開拓使の博物館時代から札幌農学校時代にかけて、およそ120点余りが所蔵されていたことが把握された。付属ラベルの採集情報や、シカ毛を用いて製作された特徴などから、90点ほどが明治期の標本として推定された。しかし、古記録と標本名称や標本ラベルの対応関係は計画段階で想定していたほどの合致が見いだせなかったこと、記録上にある液浸標本が全く確認できなかったことなどの課題が残った。函博所蔵標本:古記録調査の結果、開拓使時代には20点ほどの魚類標本が所蔵されていたことが明らかとなった。函博が作成した目録に依拠して調査を行ったところ、該当する標本15点が確認された。しかし、北大標本と比べ、明治期に利用されていた標本ラベルがほとんど欠落しているなど、標本情報の信頼性や、今後の研究利用面での発展性には疑問が残る。科博所蔵標本:東博旧蔵標本が移管されている科博には、明治期の東博の天産部標本目録が保存されており、これを用いて照合を行ったが、震災・戦災・移管などの影響で、剥製標本はほとんど残されていなかった。ただし、北海道の博物館とは対照的に、該当する液浸標本が複数確認された。この標本調査を継続することで、開拓使の魚類標本の製作方法の全容が把握できるものと期待された。
