○研究目的一昨年に発生した口蹄疫で、産業動物臨床獣医師不足が明らかとなった。しかしながら、対策は十分取られていない。大学においても、伴侶動物の人気を反映して、産業動物臨床の教育体制は十分とは言えない。現在の大学のカリキュラムの授業だけでは、産業動物臨床獣医師の養成には不十分である。産業動物に接する機会を提供し、少しでも産業動物臨床獣医師を目指す学生を増やすことを目的とする。さらに、牛の育成、肥育、繁殖、飼料管理、衛生管理などの知識や技術を習得させ、病気やその治療だけでなく、牛に係わる幅広い技術や知識を兼ね備えた産業動物臨床獣医師の養成を目的とする。○研究方法まず、学生が子牛、繁殖雌牛および肥育牛を育てる。さらに繁殖雌牛には人工授精を実施して、妊娠、出産させる。具体的なプログラムは、定期的な身体測定から、牛の保定、子牛の個体識別のための鼻紋採取、子牛登録、去勢、鼻環の取り付け、断角、削蹄、発情行動の観察、直腸検査、人工授精、超音波検査、妊娠診断、分娩観察、子牛の哺乳などである。病気が発症すれば、診察、検査を実施し、診断と適切な治療をする。さらに飼料管理においては、牛の状況に合わせた飼料設計も学習する。また、岐阜県内の獣医師から病牛が搬入される機会もあり、臨床診断後に治療する。予後不良の場合には,病理解剖して原因究明する。○研究成果学生は、産業動物獣医師として必要な知識や技術の習得レベルは、まだ高くはないが、着実に身に着けている。牛の日頃の飼養について、学生たちは積極的に定期ミーティングを持ち、日々の状況報告、問題点が話し合われ、飼養管理の改良に試行錯誤している。当初、牛の取り扱いに慣れない学生もいたが、実習が進むにつれて、取り扱いに不安がある学生はいなくなった。学生の中には、将来、産業動物臨床獣医師として活躍することを目指す者も増えており、実際にこの春、その希望を叶えた学生もいる。
