本研究では、これまで宮古・八重山諸島の考古学的な研究課題とされる無土器時代からグスク時代への移り変わりについて、出土遺物の点から再整理を行い、各時代の関係性についえアプローチを行うことを研究目的とした。そのために、まずこれまでに発掘調査の実施された遺跡について、報告書をもとに遺物の集成を行った。また、宮古諸島のグスク時代の遺跡においては、八重山諸島と比べて発掘調査件数も少なく、各遺跡の様相も不明確な点が多いという観念から、宮古諸島内のグスク時代の初期もしくは前半に位置づけられる遺跡の踏査・表面採集を行った。これらの資料については本研究内で資料整理・図化作業を行った。併せて、文化財資料室内で未実測の資料についても図化を行った。本研究の結果、宮古・八重山諸島の無土器時代の遺跡を大きく3つの段階に分ける編年案について出土遺物の組成という点から、より詳細な情況を確認することができた。また、グスク時代への展開については、宮古諸島の遺跡を中心に考察を行った。その結果、従来の発掘調査出土遺物や、表面採集資料、文化財資料室収蔵資料をもとに13世紀後半から15世紀前半にかけて、同様の遺物組成や遺構、遺跡の立地に共通性をもった遺跡群の設定を行った。この遺跡群は、〓〓遺構や、丘陵上の立地という点で防御的な意味合いをおもっている。また、遺物組成についても白磁ビロークスII、III、白磁今〓仁タイプ、中国〓褐〓陶器、野城式土器を主体とする、これらの遺跡群は、15世紀前半で終焉をむかえる。これらの遺跡群が出現・消滅する社会的背景性を明らかにすることができた。
