1〈たたら製鉄の操業〉海岸における砂鉄採集、炉を組んでのたたら製鉄操業により、古来の鉄作りを今年も生徒ともに体験することができ、日本刀に代表される優れた刃物の材料となる和鉄を自分たちで作り出せた意義は大きい。さらに、たたら製鉄の理論・歴史についての学習会を持ったことで、たたら製鉄や鉄の奥行きを広げることができた。操業および理論学習ではNPOたたらのスタッフおよび東京藝術大学永田和宏教授に指導を仰いでいる。2〈刃物作りへ〉特に今年は、たたら操業で作った和鉄から、生徒と一緒に包丁やナイフなどの道具作りに結びつけることができたことが最大の成果である。操業におけるものづくりの面白さや和鉄作りの貴重さだけでも教育効果は絶大であるが、積年の夢であった和鉄からの道具作りにまで辿り着くことができたのが、今回の研究の成果である。これには職人でありながら丁寧に指導してくださるすばらしい教育者である愛媛県の刀匠藤田國宗氏のご指導に負うところが大きい。鉄作りからさらに4日間の鍛刀体験を経て道具を完成させたことで、生徒の到達感、満足感は大変大きなものとなった。3〈啓蒙活動〉本校の敷地で生徒と一緒にたたら製鉄の操業を行った。地学部の生徒が中心だが、授業でも操業への参加を呼びかけ、一般生徒も加わった。さらに、生徒の保護者や兄弟姉妹、他校教員生徒など多数の参加があり、それぞれの参加者が日本古来の砂鉄からの鉄作りを体験したことは大きい。本校の教職員から話題として挙がることも多く、操業の効果は絶大である。また、刀匠の指導を受けながら和鉄(地金)から刃物を鍛造するすべての工程をこなした体験は、生徒の満足度からして次世代へ確実に伝わっていくものと考える。
