本研究は、先行課題により評定者の特定の性格特性概念を活性化する手続きを用いて、さまざまな条件でこの手続きの効果を検討する。これによって、行動を性格特性概念で分類するまでの認知過程の中で、評定者側の要因と被評定者側の要因の役割を検討することを目的とする。二つ以上の性格特性と関連のある行動の記述を手がかりとして性格判断をする場合には、一般的には被験者は先行課題によって活性化された性格特性概念を用いて、その行動を解釈することが報告されている。この効果に影響を及ぼすさまざまな要因も報告されている。たとえば、被験者が priming に気づいていたり、正確な性格判断を行うように動機づけられている場合、先行課題で活性化した性格特性を用いた性格判断が行われない(e.g.,Lombaardi,Higgins,& Bargh,1987;Thompson,et.al.,1994他) 。このようなprimingの研究では、行動の記述から性格を判断させている。先行課題による性格特性概念の活性化という評定者の認知に働きかける手続きは、行動の言語的記述を性格特性概念で分類する段階において効果を持つ。しかし、実際に行動を観察したとき、その行動をどう記述するかという時点で、すでに、評定者の意味システムが働いている。そこで、行動の抽象的な言語的記述(抽象的言語条件)を手がかりとする場合より、ビデオによる行動観察(ビデオ条件)を手がかりとする場合の方が、パーソナリティ判断に影響する先行課題の効果が小さくなることが予想される。3種類の行動について、抽象的言語条件とビデオ条件で、ほぼ、予想通りの結果を得ることができた。行動の言語的記述を刺激としたときには先行課題の効果が確認されているが、ビデオ刺激では先行課題による効果が明確ではなくなっている。また、先行課題の効果の出現するパーソナリティ表現語のカテゴリーも言語条件とビデオ条件で異なるものもあった。
