本科学研究費補助金交付初年度以降、『明治工業史』10巻、『帝国海軍教育史』10巻、『官員録・職員録集成』、『官庁沿革誌集成』等の基礎的文献史料を購入し、また在京の諸図書館、資料館等に出張したが、その成果は単著『近代日本における仏語系専門学術人材の研究』(風間書房、平成10年2月28日刊)として出版することができた。さらに今年度は、設備備品費で『外務省沿革類従』など明治期外交関係図書、『泰西国法論』等の近代法学関係図書、『近代日本軍事史』等の砲兵工兵史関係図書、『職長養成』等の造船教育関連図書等の諸史料を購入、また在京の諸資料館のほか日仏会館図書館、横浜開港資料館、広島県立図書館等での資料検索を行なった。また出張旅費により、1998年9月に開催された「日仏教育シンポジウムTOKYO1998」における「日仏教育文化交流史シンポジウム」パネリストとして発表し、今回の研究成果を発表するとともに、大会に参加した日仏両国の諸分野の研究者からも、研究テーマに関わる貴重な情報を得ることができた。その成果は近日刊行される『日仏教育学会年報』第5号通巻27号に研究論文として掲載される。これは、仏語系造船技術第三世代が受けた各時期の教育カリキュラムの内容について明らかにしたものであるが、これまでの研究では明確にされていなかったものである。研究者のこれまでの研究では、仏語系人材の全体的な近代史のなかにおける位置付けが曖昧であったが、今回購入・調査した文献・諸資料により、仏語系法学、造船、陸軍軍事技術人材が輩出・活躍していった時代の、法学史、工業技術史の全体的背景を考証することが可能になり、たんに教育史にとどまらない近代史の全体構造の中での仏語系人材の位置付けを、少しずつではあるが明らかにすることができたように思う。
