中世における聖人伝の特質を明らかにする試みとして、中古の遁世者増賀(913〜1003)が、中古・中世でどのように理想化されたかを中心に研究を進めた。その方法としては、聖人が移住した多武峯・談山神社(奈良県桜井市)周辺に残る文化財の調査・分析、および、信仰儀礼のフィールドワークを主として行い、聖人が信仰対象としてどのように位置づけられていたかを考察した。資料分析の成果としては、聖人の臨終を書き留めた「道義記」(宮内庁書陵部蔵『春夜神記』所収)記録者僧道義を考える一端として、『大鏡』に言及されている藤原兼家四男道義との関連性を考慮しつつ、道義評の「よのしれもの」の語について分析した。その結果、道義が「しれもの」とされたのは先天的な障害者の意味ではなく、出自に関連する語であり、出生のありかたが貴族社会に受け入れられなかったであろうとの結論を得た。したがって、僧道義と藤原道義が同一人物という仮説も考え得るようである。また、文化財調査の結果、聖人にかかわる肖像画2点(奈良国立博物館寄託本、法隆寺蔵本)・絵巻2種(「多武峯縁起絵巻」、「増賀上人行業記」)・講式2種(「談山権現講私記」、「南山講式」)の存在が確認された。講式を含む聖人関係の資料は今後翻刻紹介する予定である。
