平成10年度は、遺存木棺材のデータの蓄積を継続し、古墳時代前期の資料を中心に木棺材の遺存例約120例を集成することができた。そのうち、栃木県栃木市栃木高校所蔵木棺、同下都賀郡大平町七廻り鏡塚古墳出土木棺、茨城県結城市中央公民館所蔵木棺、奈良県天理市天神山古墳出土木棺、同御所市宮山古墳出土木棺、福岡県筑紫郡那珂川町妙法寺古墳群出土木棺等の調査を実施し、平成9年度とあわせて保存良好な木棺資料の大半については実見調査を終えたことになる。現在は新規出土資料、遺漏資料の収集につとめながら、研究のまとめを行っている。具体的には、遺存木棺材の観察結果と棺内遺物出土状況の再検討結果をもとに前期古墳の長大な木棺の棺内構造について復元的に考察した論文を作成中である。遺存木棺材のデータ収集に際しては、材の樹種についても極力留意したが、その結果木棺の形態や構造と材の選択には地域性や階層性に根ざした一定の相関関係があるとの見通しを得ている。今回の作業を通じて新たに提起されたこの問題についても、今後分析科学的分野の研究者と連携しながら研究を深化させていきたいと考えている。

In 2010, there were about 120 cases of wooden coffins collected in the center of the ancient tomb. The investigation of wooden coffins unearthed from Tochigi High School in Tochigi City, Seven Mirror Tomb in Ohira-cho, Tongxia Prefecture, wooden coffins unearthed from Central Civic Hall in Ibaraki Prefecture, wooden coffins unearthed from Tenjinshan Ancient Tomb in Tenri City, Nara Prefecture, wooden coffins unearthed from Miyayama Ancient Tomb in Tonggoso City, wooden coffins unearthed from Miaofa Temple Ancient Tomb Group in Nakagawa-cho, Chikuchi Prefecture, Fukuoka Prefecture, etc. Most of the data in Heisei 9 are well preserved. Now the new rules reveal data, missing data and collection, research and development. The results of the investigation of the remains of the coffin and the results of the re-examination of the unearthed remains of the coffin are in the process of being completed.
