今回の研究は、イギリスの現代演劇の中で、エスニック・マイノリティーの文化がどのように表現されているかということを、同じようなテーマを持つ現代イギリス(英語)小説と比較するものであった。今年度はまず、昨年入手した資料、情報などをもとにして、過去十年間のイギリスにおけるマイノリティー文学を探索できるようなデータ・ベース作りを目指した。その作業の過程で明らかになってきたのは、アジア系作家、演出家の活躍である。80年代にはヨーロッパの古典演劇をアジアのセッティングに移して演じるJatinda VermaのTara Artsのようなアジアの表現の仕方が商業ベースで成功をおさめたが、90年代に入ってからは、翻訳的なものでなく、イギリスのアジア移民社会そのものを扱う作品が増えていることがわかった。その場合、東西文化の狭間に身を置く者の葛藤を主題として扱っている作品が多い。人種差別や偏見とのたたかいというよりも、移民社会の中に存在する、アイデンティティーの問題、ジェンダーの問題、そして、宗教の問題を、小説よりはコメディー・タッチで描いている。特に、宗教は、移民社会においては、生活規範として、アイデンティティーの拠り所として、他民族の移民との連帯感(特にイスラム教の場合)を強める上で、精神面にとどまらない役割を担っており、現代イギリスの(若者)。文化やジェンダーとの関わりからも、無視できない存在として描かれている。このような文学作品における宗教の扱われ方は、これからも注目され得る分野であろう。昨年度および本年度、手に入った作品を参照して傾向を確かめた後、本年度は、Hanif Kureishiの作品を重点的に研究した。彼の作品においても、宗教は大きなテーマであるといえる。大藪は、作品における「沈黙」の表現や、「沈黙」と「ことば」の関係に興味を持っているので、Kureishiの作品中、「沈黙」に準ずる存在として重要な位置を占めている「音楽」の扱われ方に焦点をあて、彼の小説と演劇における、宗教と若者文化の関係を比較考察した。(平成10年度 紀要論文)また、カルテュラル・スタディーの理論を復習讐、検討する過程で、Pierre Bourdieuの考え方が、このような分野を考察する上で有効であると思われたので、現在Bourdieuの考え方が、具体的に、どう利用できるか、考察中である。
