项目摘要

「風景」と「言語」の問題を軸にして、18世紀から20世紀の英詩の特徴を探るという展望の中で、本年は主にテニスンを中心にヴィクトリア朝の文学について考察し、あわせて、ワーズワスらロマン派の文学との関連について考察した。研究としては(1)論文「『イノック・アーデン』と解釈学的な旅」、および(2)国際学会での口頭発表“Descriptive Sketches and the New Language"としてまとめた。従来、文学史としては記述されて来たが、今後の研究が期待される18世紀、ロマン派、そしてヴィクトリア朝の詩の関連について、および、それらと象徴主義や、小説における自然主義との有機的な関わりを明らかにする、という、長期的な展望の研究の一部である。最近のヴィクトリア朝研究の中で、とくに「神と自然」をめぐる自然科学史研究の成果をもとにテニスンの活動や作品を再評価すると、当時の英国文化の特徴は、さまざまな領域に渡る時間的・空間的なコミュニケーションの拡大であることがわかる。上記(1)では、テニスンの作品に特徴的なのは解釈学的なコードの間の「対話」であり、コミュニケーションと翻訳を中心的なテーマとしてヴィクトリア朝時代に特徴的なコミュニケーションのあり方を描いたことを示した。共通する視点から、「風景」や「牧歌」、「言語」のテーマに関わる「コード転換」というテーマから、ワーズワスの叙景詩を、18世紀のピクチャレスク美学との関連から考察したものが(2)である。本年度と同様、今後も、同時代の絵画、造園術、自然科学史、宗教、文化論など、重要な手掛かりになると思われる領域の研究を参考にして、ロマン派以降の英詩について考察を続ける予定である。
