本研究は、現代認識論(分析系知識理論)において現在脚光を浴びている「徳認識論」(virtue epistemology)の理論的整備の一助として、「徳」という概念の明確化を計るものである。方法論は以下の通りである。まず、「徳」概念を、そのルーツである西洋古典思想の文脈の中で分析し、その主要な要素を抽出する。次に、現代認識論における「徳」概念を、同様に、現代認識論の文脈の中で分析し、主要素を抽出する。次に、双方の主要素を比較することによって、二つの文脈における「徳」概念の共通性と相違点を明らかにする。最後に、それらの相違が持つ哲学的、哲学史的意味を考察する。西洋古典思想における「徳」概念の分析として注目すべきは、13世紀のキリスト教神学者トマス・アクィナスの主著『神学大全』第2部第55問題「徳の本質について」の論述である。その論述を総合すると、「徳」(特に、人間的な徳)とは、人間に固有な理性的能力をして、善い結果を生み出すように働かせるような、一種の習慣である。一方、現代認識論における「徳」についてであるが、「徳」概念の理解に関して、大きく二つのグループが存在する。この二つのグループの関係については、本研究の計画段階では、未だ明らかでなかったが、研究を進める中で、それぞれ異なる二つの徳認識論と見なすべきではないかということが、次第に明らかになった。一つのグループは、Ernest Sosaに代表されるグループであり、Alvin Plantinga,Alvin Goldman,John Grecoらが、主要なメンバーである。彼らは、様々に変化する状況において、安定して真なる信念を生み出すような能力のことを「徳」と呼ぶ。もう一つのグループの代表はLinda Zagzebskiであり、アリストテレス的な行為者の動機を重視した「徳」理論を、そのまま認識論に持ち込もうとする。これら双方は、古典的徳理論の二つの解釈可能性を示すものとして興味深い。
