本年度も平成12年度に引き続き主に神道系宗教団体の水子供養調査に力を注いだ。平成11年度までは、日本社会では仏教系の宗教団体を対象に水子供養調査を行ってきたので、比較を行うためである。調査を行った中の神道系B教会では、大祭を参与観察し、教会長や信徒にインタビューを行った。この教会では、先祖の冥福を祈る大祭のなかに水子を入れ込んでいる。水子を祀っている人は30歳代前半から70歳代後半の女性まで多様であった。教会長へのインタビューによれば、「今生きている者がすべての御霊を慰める必要があり、とくに亡くなった胎児の霊は悲しがっているので祀ることが大切だ」という。「悲しがる」という表現や信徒へのインタビューでも推察できたが、亡くなった胎児を亡くなった"人間のように"扱っていた。さらに大祭では「食べ物を供えて真心を表しているので、神様の元で安らかに眠り、ゆかりのある人を守って、幸を与えたまえ」という祝詞があげられた。これは、日本の民俗宗教の根底にある「死者の霊をきちんと供養しなければならない。祀ることによってオカゲがある」という考えに繋がるものであろう。報告者が研究の目的で提示した「日本社会では先祖供養を行うことが潜在意識として根付いている。言い換えれば民俗宗教の行為として先祖供養が定着しており、それが現代において水子供養にまで拡大した。」という仮説を裏付けるものである。最終的には、複数の神道系宗教団体などを調査して、胎児の葬送についての考えを仏教系団体と比較し、水子供養について社会学的に考察したい。なお、水子供養というテーマの質から参与観察やインフォーマントへの聞き取りについても慎重に行う必要があり、このことから調査の方法についてもあらためて研究した。報告者は本年度に収集したデータを整理し、水子供養と民俗宗教との関連、質的調査法について論文を執筆し、学術雑誌あるいは図書に掲載する予定である。
