今年度は、20世紀前半のインドにおける地域アイデンティティやナショナリズムを考察する上で、新たに二つの側面に注目した。その一つは、南アジア研究で近年活発なジェンダー研究の観点を取り入れながら、インド人エリート層が地域アイデンティティやナショナリズムを強調する中で、この動きとの関連から「男性性」「女性性」をどのような形で構築しようとしたのかをさぐるものである。その際には、エリート層内部でのジェンダー観の多様性に注目すると同時に、こうしたエリート層が提示したジェンダー観が、社会の異なる立場の人々の間でどのように受け止められたのかについても、限られた資料から考察を試みた。特に興味深かった点は、いわゆるエリート層出身者ではない女性たちや、社会的な地位の低い寡婦たちが、植民地期の学校教育制度を利用しながら、次第に地方レベルの教育・社会・文化活動に独自の形で携わるに至るまでの過程である。そこには、エリート層が主張するようなジェンダー観と折り合いをつけながら、実態としてはそのジェンダー観にとらわない独自の活動領域を築いていった女性たちの姿が見いだせる。今年度の研究で注目したもう一つの側面は、地域アィデンティティやナショナリズムが形成過程での英語の位置づけである。すでに昨年度にM・K・ガンディーの言語観をまとめた際にも言及したが、エリート層が「インド」や「グジャラート」というアイデンティティを強調する際には、植民地統治の中でエリート層に深く浸透した英語をどのように位置づけるのかが大きな問題点となった。この議論は、独立後のインドでも続けられており、現代の状況も視野に入れながら、今後さらに検討をすすめる予定である。
