Modern tropical coral reefs are declining due to the rise in sea surface temperature (SST), ocean acidification, and pollution. Acroporid corals as major reef-builders are extremely vulnerable to anthropogenic stressors and are being replaced by other coral taxa in numerous localities worldwide. The reefs of Bermuda, where acroporids are absent due to the northern location, offer the unique opportunity to study patterns and rates of Holocene reef accretion as model for possible future coral reef development devoid of Acropora. Therefore, it is planned to conduct a core study of the reef margin of the Bermuda platform. Here, funding for a reconnaissance trip to Bermuda is requested in order to identify suitable drill sites, to make contact with local scientists and authorities, and to become acquainted with the local infrastructure to successfully conduct the project in the near future.
