The comprehensive realignment of Oriens Extremus in terms of contents, format, and working procedures which had been initiated in 2012 (issue 51), was finalized during the funding phase2014 to 2016. The journal thus acquired a clear-cut profile in the field of intellectual and conceptual history that was further highlighted by several theme issues.The visibility of Oriens Extremus was considerably enhanced in the course of the journal’s transformation into digital form. This included the comprehensive expansion of the digital infrastructure, which entails a complete digital archive that provides open access to each issue since the journal’s founding in 1954.The current application for funding (2018-2019) will ensure that Oriens Extremus will keep pace, both in terms of contents and working procedures, with current international developments concerning academic journals from the field of East Asian Studies. The field of intellectual and conceptual history, which is essential to Oriens Extremus, is characterized by growing interconnections in international research. This leads, in turn, to the considerable increase in reciprocal publications of East Asian and European as well as North American research articles in various journals in the field. In this context, the double issue 56/57 (2018) and issue 58 (2019) are expected to further strengthen Oriens Extremus’ standing as one of the leading journals in the field of East Asian intellectual and conceptual history. To this purpose, issues 56/57 and 58 will be devoted to topics that exemplify the journal’s richness in terms of contents, its presence in the context of current research (i.e. conference organized by the Max Weber Foundation in Peking), and also its relevance for organizing current research activities ("Initiating Workshop" at the Department of Chinese Language and Culture, Hamburg University, with the aim of strengthening international cooperation in intellectual and conceptual history).The journal’s digital infrastructure is going to be further developed in order to improve the usability and visibility of its digital archive. Every individual research article contained in the archive is going to be tagged with keywords. The digital archive is going to be even further upgraded by the addition of a search function and the journal’s international network is going to be made more visible on its website. Furthermore, an Oriens Extremus channel is going to be launched on WeChat – a social media platform widely used in East Asia – that will facilitate access to prospective readers and contributors.
