本年度の研究の目的はランベルトの「蓋然性の論理学」の意図とその歴史的意義を明らかにすることにあった。「蓋然性の論理学」とは数学的・統計的な「確率」の定理に基づいて、帰納推理における「仮説」が「証拠」によって支持される程度を推理計算する論理学である。ライプニッツは人間の思考の究極的な構成要素である原始概念や原理の組み合わせによって真理を導出する「結合法」の影響を受け、これを三段論法に適用して「発見の論理学」を構想した。ライプニッツにおいて「蓋然性の論理学」はそれまで確実な真理が不可能と考えられていた領域にまでこの「発見の論理学」を展開することを意図していた。ランベルトはこの構想を継承・実現したが、以下の点にランベルトの独自性がある。一つは「蓋然性」を命題間の「整合性の程度」として解駅し、命題の「真偽の決定不可能性」を意味する「仮象」として位置づけたことにある。その背景には真理を「完全な調和」と見なし、「蓋然性」を「不完全な調和」と見なすランベルトの整合的真理観がある。今一つは「賭け事の理論」である「確率」を三段論法に適用する際に生じる結論の未規定性を「非加法的確率」として展開したことである。ランベルトにはライプニッツやヴォルフのように「蓋然性」を「存在論的に」基礎づけようとする意図はない。むしろ上記二つの特徴に示されているように、「蓋然性」が事象そのものにではなく、事象についてのわれわれの知識のあり方に依存しているという、この概念の「認識論的性格」を明らかにすることにランベルトの意図があった、と言える。
