本研究は、意匠登録出願の戦略性に関する筆者の一連の研究を集大成するとともに新たに研究を進め、また改めて国内製造業の中から特に意匠権競争が熾烈であり係争事件が発生しやすい家電機器メーカー数社を対象として、意匠登録出願の戦略的手法を類型化して、各々の特性を明らかにすることを目的としている。日本デザイン学会と芸術工学会において、筆者が過去に発表してきた論文と口頭発表などの研究成果をはじめ、それらに関連する研究内容を敷衍、編集、体系化するとともに、更に新たな視点から意匠登録出願研究を進めて総合的に水準を高めた。また、家電機器メーカー数社の知的財産部門へのアンケート調査と担当者の聞き取り調査を実施して企業の実態を把握するとともに、意匠公報により意匠登録出願の事例を調査のうえ、それらの戦略的手法特性を明らかにし、最終的に戦略レベルと戦術レベルの意匠登録出願方法論について明らかにし論述した。尚、意匠登録出願は、攻撃と防御の両側面を吟味して立案されるものであるが、今回の研究では、各登録事例の仮想コンペティターを特定することができなかったため攻撃面の観点からのみの考察となった。
