戦前の東アジアにおける社会・文化・国際情勢等に対する再検討が問われる昨今、特に当研究では、植民地朝鮮の仏教と日本との関わりに焦点を絞り、そこから判る諸問題の有り様を明らかにするのが狙いである。なかでも、内鮮一体や東亜連盟体具現のために常に街頭・広場・群衆の前に動員された釈迦降誕節には、総督府と朝鮮人との接点がありありと思い浮かぶ。ところがよく見ればそれは、伊藤博文からなる明治の帝国憲法上で位置づけられた日本仏教の精神そのもので、朝鮮人とのあいだでみられた接点も本当は‘東亜'からみれば僅かな部分にすぎず、東亜という全体から日本仏教、つまり釈迦降誕節の花祭りを考えなければならない。東亜構築のための精神的な一軸としてなぜ釈迦降誕節が選ばれたのかは、キリスト教文明の欧米を強く意識した外在的な理由もあろうが、仏教が東亜の精神的な脊髄であり続けてきたという内在的な理由もある。この両理由から、釈迦降誕節の花祭りはまず日本で、明治から大正にわたり、諸形式が規定され統一された。それから朝鮮では大正から昭和にかけて花祭りが波及され今日に至るわけだが、その痕跡は意外と今の時代まで残っていて、現在の韓国の仏教、つまり初八日儀礼の重要な部分をなしている。終戦とともに日本における花祭りが急激に冷めた事実とは裏腹に、なぜ韓国には花祭りの要素が多く残ったのかは、文化の連続非連続理論から推論することができる。それで韓国や日本において、釈迦降誕節の浴仏・提燈行列・花徽章・畳み込み式燃灯・式典行事・花祭りの歌等の調査に臨んだわけだが、戦前の思想的形骸が依然として日本や韓国の仏教儀礼の形の上に残されているのは、今に限らず、今後の東アジア研究のための重要な布石になれたと思う。
