四国八十八ヶ所霊場を巡る遍路道は古来重要な道として栄えてきた。遍路道と湧水の空間的な存在意義は,社会学や民俗学的な観点から研究が行われている。しかし,現在のルートが何故設定されたのかという検討は行われていないので,実用的および自然地理学的な観点から遍路道の存在意義を考え,八十八ヶ所霊場途中にある水場から検討した。お遍路は札所を巡っていく際に,道中の水場で休憩し水を補給して旅を続けなければならない。従って,水場の無い遍路道は次第に廃れていき,水場のある遍路道が開拓されていったと考えることができる。この遍路道途中にある水場の中には弘法大師が杖を突いたら水が出たという「弘法水」の伝説が数多く語り継がれており,四国内だけで100ヶ所以上,全国で1500ヶ所近い存在していることが明らかとなった。四国では札所の寺院に弘法水が存在している場合が多いが,遍路道途中にも相当数の弘法水が存在している。従って,お遍路は途中に水場のあることを重要な条件として遍路道を策定し,そこに弘法大師の偉大な足跡を後世に残すために路傍にあった湧水に,弘法水の伝説を摺り合わせていったと考えられる。遍路道のある四国はほぼ全域が堆積岩地帯であり,そこから湧出する水はミネラル分に乏しいが,弘法水の水質は,一般的な湧水と比較してミネラル分が異常に多く含まれている。遍路道上の湧水とそれ以外の湧水のミネラル分を比較すると,倍近い濃度差が検出された。従って,四国遍路道における水場はお遍路にとって体調維持のために重要なミネラルに富んだ湧水のある道が淘汰され残されたものと考えることができる。
