项目摘要

初年度に当たる平成19年度には7月14日より7月25日の間、中国においてプラダクシナー・パタに関するフィールドワークを行った。ここでは龍門石窟について報告する。造営時期が北魏前期に当たる雲岡では石窟中央にある塔柱が垂直の中心軸をなし、その周りの空間がプラダクシナー・パタとなっていることは既に了解されていた。この塔柱が北魏後期に造営された龍門石窟では消失する。塔柱の周囲を回るプラダクシナー・パタも同時に消失したかに見える。プラダクシナー・パタは消えたのか、これが調査の一つのポイントとなった。石窟の周壁は彫像で埋め尽くされ、ひとはそれらを礼拝しつつ見て回ることになる。そしてほとんどの石窟において天井の中央に蓮華のレリーフが大きく一つ彫り出されている(天蓮華)。このことから、消失した塔柱の代替として天蓮華が表現されたのではないかとの仮説が考えられた。塔柱は存在しなくても、天蓮華を中心とし、彫像のある周壁に沿ってひとが歩く時、周壁沿いの空間がプラダクシナー・パタに変容すると解釈される。そして窟空間の全体は天蓮華を中心とする3次元のマンダラをなす。蓮華のイメージは密教胎蔵マンダラ図絵に顕著だが、これに先行して3次元のマンダラが石窟において表現されていることが見出された。その後に展開された唐期の龍門石窟において天蓮華の直下、台座の上に載る本尊仏が窟中央に据え置かれるようになったことが認められた。本尊仏と天蓮華はイマジナリーに垂直の中心軸をなしている。これは、塔柱による垂直中心軸の変容したものと見なすことが出来、先の仮設を補強するものとなった。周壁には羅漢像や千体仏が密度高く彫り出されている。これらを次々に礼拝しつつ歩く時、ひとは天蓮華-本尊仏の周りをも回る。すなわち、天蓮華-本尊仏を中心とし、その周囲をプラダクシナー・パタが回っているのであり、ここでも3次元のマンダラが認められた。以上の知見建築学においても仏教学においても従来なかったものである。
