昨年度に引き続いて、8月2日から9月16日までアメリカ合衆国ノースカロライナ州で課題テーマに関するリサーチを行なった。今年はかつてのプランテーション内に残されている墓地を訪ねて埋葬されている(元)奴隷たちの名前を収集し、昨年度集めた所有者の財産目録から作ったカードのデータベースと照合することによって、1860年の段階で194組の夫婦を確認することができた。続いて、1866年の同棲登録および1870年センサスと原票と比較して、これらの夫婦が奴隷解放後も夫婦として生活しているかどうかを追跡確認した。その結果、1866年から翌1867年にかけて少なくとも144組(もしかすると最大で149組)が同じ相手と同棲登録をしていることが分かった。他方、3人の男性と1人の女性は1860年段階とは異なる相手を選んで同棲登録を行なっている。また、1870年のセンサスとの比較対照から、1860年の夫婦のうち152組が1870年になっても同じ相手と生活をともにしていることが判明した。1860年の194組の夫婦のうち、78.4%に当たる152組が1870年になっても同じ相手と夫婦として生活を共にしていたという事実は、この10年間に奴隷解放に伴う社会変化が大きかっただけでなく、死亡率が高かったことを考慮すると調査以前の研究代表者の予想を上回る数字だったと言うことができる。少なくともキャメロン・プランテーションの奴隷たちについては、かつてHerbert Gutmanが主張したように奴隷たちの間の夫婦・家族の結びつきが強く、奴隷解放後の急激な変化にも関わらず家族を維持したと結論づけることができよう。
