In this study, the following four studies were performed during two years.1. Investigations on flower setting in Cryptomeria japonica forests in Japanese islands.(1) Flower setting in C. japonica stands according to locality. In general, a tendency was discovered for the setting of male flowers to be more abundant in plantations established by seedlings as compared with plantations established by cultivated cuttings.(2) The flower setting of C. japonica differed remarkably according to varieties and strains. Local varieties of the Japan Sea coast origin were later in the starting age of flower formation as compared with those of the Pacific coast origin.2. Studies on pollen production in C. japonica and Chamaecyparis Obtusa stands.(1) Pollen production in stands differed according to variety, tree age, habitat, year, etc. The amounts of pollen production in C. japonica stands were estimated to be 250-660kg/ha・yr in middle-aged stands, and 1,050kg/ha・yr in old stands in a year of abundance.(2) The amounts of pollen production in middle-aged Ch. obtusa stands were estimated to be 93-620kg/ha・yr in a year of abundance.3. Studies on the dispersal dynamics of C5. japonica and Ch. obtusa pollens.The time of pollen dispersal varied according to year and habitat. In the Kansai district, pollen dispersal started during early or mid February in C5. japonica and during mid March to early April in Ch. obtusa. The period of pollen dispersal was 60-80 day s in Ch. obtusa. The number of fallen pollen grains varied according to year, the place of investigation, the state of stands, etc.4. Studies on the inhibition of male flower setting in C. japonica by chemicals. It was able to inhibit male flower setting by spraying with growth regulators. Maleic hydrazide. NAA and B-999 were effective to kill young male flowers.
