The Developement of an Electronic Dictionary System and Its application to Asian and African Languages.

Two Sepatate systems of electronic dictionary have been developed, the first "DICSEARCH" being for the languages using Latin alphabets, and the second, "DICSEARCH X", suitable for non-Latin characters, Both systems use the same dictionary data file. Therefore, file generation needs to be done only once."DICEARCH" retrieves and displays the dictionary data with a fast speed. File organization is based on Ashton-Tate dBASE III format. For setting up "DICSEARCH X", a few preparatory steps are required. They are ; 1) Designing the character font-set with a font-editor ; 2) Assigning the desingned font-set to a specific position on the keyboard ; 3) Definition of the transformation rules. The last step is obligatory for the character system that have many positional variations for a character like Arabic script. "DICSEARCH X" can handle any kinds of character systems, starting from Kanji down to Arabic script. It is extremely helpful to deal with the Asian script system which have been, so far, ignored by the publishers of electronic dictionaries.Both system run on NEC PC-9801 series computers. The Japanese language manual describes all the features.
