the effects of 2-generation high fat diet on prostate carcinogenesis

The aim of the present investigation is to examine the hypothesis that a greater amount of dietary fat enhances prostate carcinogenesis, although a number of experiments have failed to prove it. Considering the possibility that the initiation of high fat diet after weaning might be too late, we started administration of high fat diet to experimental rats in utero. Female ACI/Seg rats were fed on either high fat (corn oil 20%) or low fat (corn oil 5%) diet. They were mated with normal male rats, and then the F2 male rats were given high or low fat diet, respectively, after weaning throughout the life. A hundred weeks after birth, they were sacrificed. Histologically, 11 of 16 rats (68.8%) fed on high fat diet, had atypical hyperplasia, while 3 of 13 (23.1%), on low fat diet. These results demonstrated that high fat diet has, although marginal, significant promoting effects on spontaneous tumorigenesis in the prostate.
