Enhancement of the adhesiveness of dental restoratives, such as composite resins, has been clinically essential. A key point in enhancing adhension is how to treat the dentin surface before bonding. We recently attempted to use an inorganic and non-acidic salt solution for pretreatment to dentin. We paid attention to the salting-in effect of rhodanides which promotes swelling of collagen and gelatin. For pretreatment, we used potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) solution. Potassium thiocyanate is frequently called potassium rhodanides which is normally found in human resting saliva at a concentration of 15mg/100ml. This study morphologically evaluted the effect of treatment of dentinal smear layr with rhodanides in combination with cross-linking agents such as ferric chloride. The homogeneous smear layr prepared on the labial surface of bovine tooth by grinding with silicon carbide paper (grit 800) was treated with 10, 5 and 1 % KSCN solutions for 60 seconds. The specimen was then rinsed with distillled water and dried for observation under a scanning electron microscope. The same experiment was performed using these KSCN solution added with 3% or 0.3% FeCl_3. Scanning electron microscopy revealed effective removal of the smear layr on the treated dentin surface and obturation of dentinal plugs. Addition of 0.3% FeCl_3 to KSCN solution was more effective for pretreatment.
