This project was carried out to clarify the causal relationships among the quality of aquascape, ability of water purification and biodiversity in aquatic environment. In result, the role of reed bed of Lake Shinji for the maintenance of higher diversity of benthic animals was found by comparing the diversity indexes between inside and outside of the reed bed. However, some exceptions were also investigated, and thus the indirect effect of reed bed which influenced the composition of bottom sediment was suggested. Concerning the diversity of aquatic macrophytes, turnover rate differed among species growing in the 45 irrigation ponds. No relation was found between species richness and pond area. Turnover rate per pond was 35.8% on average, while that of total ponds investigated (i.e.metapopulation) was 8.1%. Plants growing in salt marsh and brackish water were also investigated around Lakes Shinji and Nakaumi and each 4 species were found. Though the miscellaneous facts were found by the present study, main purpose could not be attained because of a limited time. Further study should be done in the future.
