1.救済制度としての備荒制度は、義倉や郷倉として古い時代から存在していたが、近世になって朱子学派が中国の社倉制度を紹介したことにより、時の為政者が強い関心を示し、その設立と維持に努力したために、社倉の機能としての救済の内容も発展し、充実したものになった。2.会津藩は他の藩に先駆けて社倉制度を創設し、江戸時代を通して維持し、その機能を果たすための努力がなされてきたので、この研究においては、会津藩の社倉制度を救済的機能の側面からその概要を文献上、及び内容的に整理することが出来た。3.研究計画では、もう一つを仙台藩をフィールドに実施する予定であったが、研究者の都合により、白河藩に変更して進めることになった。4.白河藩の救済制度としての抹倉種借米制度の成立とその運用の実態を、文献上及びその内容を整理することが出来た。5.近世、江戸時間には、宝暦、天明、天保の大きな飢饉に遭遇しているが、特に白河藩では一人の餓死者も出していないといわれているのは、単に救済制度の充実だけでなく、農民の生活基盤を保護し、農業の生産性をあげるための勧農政策を取り、農民生活の安定のための多様な施策を長期的に取り続けていたためであると考えられる。6.近世の救済制度は藩の自治性の中で実施されたものである。会津藩も白河藩も自然環境にも恵まれ、有能な藩主をもった傑出した藩であったので、そこに近世の救済制度の典型を見ることができた。
