本研究は教員養成における教養主義と専門主義の成立過程を、19世紀米国の教育メディアの分析から明らかにしようとしたものであって、平成5年度の研究の概要を次のように報告することができる。考察の対象をオーバニ州立師範学校(1844年創立)に選定し、本研究の特色となる史料の解析は、次の出版物に依拠した。それは主としてオーバニを中心として発刊された新聞類、すなわち1840年代から1900年代に至るAlbany Express紙、Daily Albany Argus紙、Daily Press紙、及びK-vickerboker,Newsの各紙に現われた教員養成論(社説、一般記事及び読者の投稿文)の訳出を試みた。この作業と平行して1840年代前後から1880年代にかけての教育雑誌類、そしてN.Y.州両院の公文書等にみられる教員養成の観念、さらに公文書類と連動する州法の制定過程を目下、分析中である。そこでは教育メディアに現われた教員養成思想と、州法との関連性をクロスして捉えることにより、教員養成における教養科目(liberal arts)と専門科目(professional studies)の胎生に検討を加える。これまでの作業で明らかになったのは、次の3領域である。【.encircled1.】教員養成にとって、どのような教科が教養科目とされたのか。その根拠について。【.encircled2.】同様に、どのような教科が専門科目とされたのか。その根拠について。【.encircled3.】教養科目と専門科目の対比において、相対的に強調された科目は何であったのか。その根拠について。上述した【.encircled1.】【.encircled2.】【.encircled3.】の思想の胎生は、アメリカ独自の教員養成思想であるのか、それとも旧大陸からの借り物であるのか、また両者の折衷的産物であったのか。この課題解決の糸口は、民衆の立場を代弁すると考えられる当時の教育雑誌の分析と共に、州内外の他の師範学校のカリキュラム分析によって明らかになるものと確信している。これらの成果は他日、出版の予定である。
