本研究では、従来殆んど社会構造に関する調査研究が実施されてこなかった奄美諸島徳之島をその対象として、調査研究をおこなった。先学の奄美研究においては、個人をベースにした「双系親族体系」の重要性が指摘されており、それが南西諸島全体の基層を成すと考えられてきた。しかし、徳之島の現地調査で得られた一次資料を基に考察すると<ハロウジ>を中心とする双系親族体系を背景としながらも、<家>(ヤー)の意識、観念が強く、独自の文化的イデオロギーを形成しているといえる。例えば、数世代前に系譜を遡及し、薩摩の武士に<家>のルーツを求める動きや特定の<家>間の通婚関係がある固定化した<家>のランクを生成している点等である。今後は、従来一律に論じられてきた奄美諸島の社会構造については、島ごとあるいは島内における差異に十分着目して調査研究を展開することが肝要と思われる。
