1研究の目的中世に大山崎油神人の拠り所として創建され、近世においては幕府より950石の神領を与えられて「当職」と呼ばれる6人の社家によって独特の神領支配が行われていた大山崎離宮八幡宮が、明治維新期の廃仏毀釈を経て神社の近代的再編の中でどのような変容を被ったのかということをあきらかにすることにあった。2研究の実施過程在地(京都府大山崎町、大阪府島本町)の神社や旧社家宅に所蔵されている文書、及び京都府総合資料館などに所蔵されている厖大な文書の収集を三度にわたって行い、そこで得られた資料の筆写・整理を行い、今後の研究の基礎的データを作成した。3新たな知見今後の総合的研究のほんの一部分であるが、とくに新たに得られた知見は、旧神領時代においては離宮八幡宮に隷属し、同社の祭典にも奉仕していた天台宗西観音寺の廃仏毀釈、椎尾社への転換について(1)西観音寺の僧侶の動向(2)西観音寺檀家農民の廃寺に対する抵抗の二点についてかなり具体的に明らかにすることができた。
