项目摘要

従来の研究においては、中世農民の逃亡(逃散など)が領主に対する抵抗運動として認識されているのに対して、近世農民のそれ(「走り」者など)は、過重な負担にあえぐ彼らが没落して逃亡(走る)とされてきた。文禄2年(1593)大友吉統(義統)は、朝鮮侵略中に明軍の来襲を前に退去したとして、豊臣秀吉より豊後国と没収された。現存する同年の検地帳には「失人(うせにん)」の記載が多くみられ、逃亡百姓が多発し、耕作者のいない土地が多く出ていたことがよくわかる。大友吉統の豊後除国・秀吉による直轄領化という政治的要因が逃亡の要因となったのである。もちろん挑戦侵略にともなう過重な負担も考慮に入れなければならない。豊臣秀吉は薩摩・大隅・日向・筑後・長門国等に対して、豊後から逃亡した百姓の返還を命じ肥後には豊後から買われていった百姓を元の様に返すように命じている。これらの事例からして、没落して走る場合と前から計画をたてて行き先きを決めた移住者としての性格を有する場合もあったことがわかる。彼らのうちでいわゆる本百姓として自立する者も少なくなかったと思われる。領主層にとっては、年貢・夫役の徴収を増加させるためには他領からの流入者(逃亡者)を歓迎したと思われる。「無主」地(=荒地化)を少くするために、「走り」者を招き入れたと思われる。
