1.古代日本語が複合によって生じる母音連接(hiatus)の一方を脱落させる現象については、従来、これに関与する母音の広・狭あるいは響度(sonority)という観点から説かれてきた。しかし、そのような見方によるかぎり、何故複合語を構成する前接形態素の末尾母音に脱落を生じる傾向が大きいのかが明確にならない。本研究では、母音脱落に関する現象を広く検討し直すことによって次のような諸点を明らかにした。(1)古代の日本語においても、母音連接を生じる複合が少なくないこと。(2)母音脱落を生じるか否か、生じるとしたら隣接するどちらの母音が失われるかには、意味的・形態的要因が密接に関連しており、これを音韻論的にのみ解釈することは不当であること。(3)前接形態素の末尾母音に脱落する傾向が強いのは、複合語の意味的重点が後接形態素にある場合が多いことの反映であると見なされること。2.同時に、日本漢字音と古代日本語の語音配列との関係についても考察し、次のような諸点を明らかにした。(4)日本呉音に認められる単母音化には、日本語の語音構造・語音配列の影響があると考えられるが、その単母音化は韻摂によって一様ではないこと。(5)即ち、止摂はすべて単母音化し、效摂は原則として単母音化しないのに対して、流摂・蟹摂には単母音化するものと、しないものとが存在するが、ともに単母音化するものの方が優勢であること。(6)流摂・蟹摂の単母音化には、日本語の-e,-u,-oを中国語音をもって表そうとした古代の転写法の影響が存在すると考えられること。
