Geographical variation in Asarum takaoi F.Maekawa (sensu lato)

A total of 38 population samples of Asarum takaoi F.Maekawa sensu lato (includ.var.hisauchii F.Maekawa) distributed in Japan were examined for several floral and karyological characters to clarify the present status of morphological variation. Results of the present investigations indicated that the Chojahara population located in Hiroshima Prefecture is distinct from the other populations in chromosome number (2n=36, triploid) and in size of stamens. Populations from the south of Nagano Prefecture and from the west of Shizuoka Prefecture are clearly distinguishable from the populations adjacent to those area by the flowering season : the former usually open flowers in October, while the latter in February to March. However, no significant difference is found in floral morphologies among those populations. Although the populations from Kiso district have been taxonomically treated as var. hisauchii in shape and size of leaves, these leaf characters considerably vary within a population and are not useful as a diagnostic character. Thefore, the populations in the Kiso district appear to fall in the range of var. takaoi. In contrast, the populations in Iida-shi and its adjacent area are characterized by having a shorter stylar protuberance and a relatively shorter calyx-lobe.
