A STUDY ON SYSTEMS ON THE DISTINGUISHING KEYS TO DIPTEROUS INSECTS

(1) Some 10,000 specimens of Japanese diptera representing all the families occurring in Japan were mounted on pins for the taxonomic and morphological studies. These specimens in addition to those already mounted in 1993 were basic specimens for this project.(2) Comparative morphological study was carried for the structure and chaetotaxy of and thorax, sturucture of appendages including antennae and legs, wing venation, male genitalia and female terminalia based on the above-mentioned specimens and those from Tanaka's Collection deposited in the Museum of Human and Nature in Hyogo.(3) Based on the morphological study, the pictorial keys to the genera were prepared for some dipterous families, of which the genera are not easily distinguished.(4) Among the families mentioned above, the families Empididae and Mycetophilidae are thought to be difficult to distinguish the genera as the families are extremely diversified and very abundant in genera. The pictorial key to the known and newly discovered genera of these two families were completed. The key of the genera of the family Empididae was published.(5) A study on the key to genera of the families other than those mentioned above also progressed, which is basically important to prepare the pictorial keys to the genera of these families.
