This study aims at developing a hearing aid system which utilizes binaural hearing mechanism. This leads to realize a good performance of hearing through the good spacial selectivity for signal sound achieved by binaural listening with the two ears. Benefits were not expected for binaural listening when the difference of hearing levels between two ears is large. However, it could be expected by compensating the recruitment in loudness correctly for both ears. In 1994, thus, examinations to extend our algorithm to compensate the recruitment to two channels was conducted. Moreover, basic research to examine binaural hearing acuity psychoacoustically was also conducted. In 1995, a real time system which realized the extended algorithm was buit and hearing experiments were conducted. As results of the experiments, it was shows that speech intelligibility was significantly improved by the binaural listening. Moreover, it is found that binaural listening with the algorithm enabled subjects who exhibit good MLD a good performance in the presence of noise and a good sound localization. From the above results, we could conclude that good performance in both speech intelligibility and sound localization could be expected if the recruitment in loudness is correctly compensated for for both ears.
