项目摘要

本研究は、世界各地において、都市スケールで、スピリチュアル・マッピング(宗教的世界の地図化)を行うための方法論を確立しようとするものである。そのために、この分野で先駆的な実績をあげている地域を訪れ、方法論的な議論を深めるとともに、プロテスタント、カトリック、ヒンドゥー都市および日本の諸都市における宗教的実態に基づくスピリチュアル・マッピングの可能性を探るものである。平成15年度までに、アメリカ、グアテマラ、インドで調査を行ったので、平成16年度には、その成果をまとめるとともに、日本国内において、主に尾鷲市の宗教調査を行った。ヤーヤ祭りや八幡祭礼などの実態を観察記録し、尾鷲市街地をくまなくまわり、観察可能な宗教関連施設や景観要素を地図上に落とした。住民の祭りに関する意識及び、祭りをめぐる経済行動に関しては、尾鷲中学校を通して行ったアンケート調査などの分析を加えた。それに加えて、尾鷲大庄屋文書の分析をし、尾鷲の宗教性の歴史的背景に迫った。さらに、宗教都市として顕著な景観を示す天理の調査、さらに日本各地の大名の墓や現代の企業の墓などを集積させている高野山の調査などを行った。その結果を、報告書『スピリチュアル・マッピングの理論化に関する宗教地理学的研究』としてまとめた。宗教現象を社会科学的に分析する視角を検討し、その視角に基づいてスピリチュアル・マッピングの従来の概念についてレビューをし、アメリカ及びグアテマラにおけるスピリチュアル・マッピングの実践を報告し、インドにおける調査結果を記述するとともに、尾鷲における分析結果を記した。また、結果の一部を、第19回国際宗教史学会で"Religious landscape of Owase on the Kii Peninsula"として発表した。
