The Villa of the Sette Bassi in Rome. Innovative architectural study and reconstruction

The Villa of the Sette Bassi in Rome has been the subject of architectural and geodetic research as part of the research project "The Villa of the Sette Bassi in Rome. Innovative architectural study and reconstruction" since spring 2020. The aims of the project are detailed building-historical investigations with a focus on the diachronic analysis of the construction techniques, the spatial structure and the typology. For the documentation of the historical building stock, traditional building survey methods (tacheometry, hand measurement) are combined with the most modern techniques (laser scanning, SFM). The application of digital, building component-related documentation and analysis methods (HBIM) for building archeology research is being evaluated, adapted and further developed. In the three years of funding (2020 to 2023), two of the three main buildings as well as the portico of the 320 m long garden were worked on in detail. In the second phase of the project (2023 to 2024), the investigations will be completed and the third main building will be analysed on the basis of the measurement data already collected. The economic area (pars rustica) and the aqueduct will be integrated into the overall investigation of the Villa of the Sette Bassi by means of optimized measurement and research methodology. The research project is being carried out in close cooperation with the Rome Department of the German Archaeological Institute and the Parco Archeologico dell ́Appia Antica.
