THE PRESENT STUDY HAS AIMED AT GETTING SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE ON DEPHOSPHORIZATION IN HOT METAL TREATMENT. THE CHARACTERISTIC POINTS IN THIS STUDY ARE: 1)BASE SLAG OF CaO- <Li_2O> - <SiO_2> SYSTEM IS NEWLY USED, AND 2)STIRRING OF THE MELT IS CONTROLLED IN THE EXPERIMENT.1. KERAMAX ELECTRIC FURNACE IS NEWLY EQUIPPED. WITH USING THIS FURNACE, CONTROL OF TEMPERATURE AND ATMOSPHERE WERE EASILY PERFORMED. 2. MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE ON SILICA ACTIVITY, ACTIVITY OF FeO ADDED AS THE REACTION COMPONENT, AND PHOSPHATE CAPACITY OF THE BASE SLAG. THESE HAVE PROVIDED USEFUL INFORMATION ON FUNDAMENTAL PROPERTIES OF BASE SLAG SYSTEM. 3. STUDIES HAVE BEEN MADE ON THE RATE OF DEPHOSPHORIZATION REACTION OF HIGH CARBON MOLTEN IRON WITH FeO-CONTAINING SLAGS. IT WAS CLEARLY SHOWN THAT DURING THE REACTION A CHANGE FROM DEPHOSPHORIZATION TO REPHOSPHORIZATION OCCURRED. REACTION MECHANISM OF DEPHOSPHORIZATION IS EXAMINED ON THE BASIS OF REACTION MODEL. 4. WITH VARIATION OF THE STARTING PHOSPHORUS CONCENTRATIONS I … More N METAL AND SLAG, VARIOUS REACTIONS RANGED FROM DEPHOSPHORIZATION TO REPHOSPHORIZATION WERE PERFORMED. FROM THE DATA IN QUASI-EQUILIBRIUM STATE, VALUES OF OXYGEN POTENTIAL AT THE SLAG-METAL INTERFACE IS OBTAINED. 5. TO OBTAIN USEFUL INFORMATION ON CLARIFYING THE MECHANISM OF DEPHOSPHORIZATION, KINETIC STUDIES HAVE BEEN MADE ON SILICON OXIDATION IN SLAG-METAL SYSTEM. FROM THE STUDY, THE EFFECTS OF STIRRING IN THE METAL AND SLAG PHASES AND CO EVOLUTION AT THE SLAG-METAL INTERFACE ARE CLARIFIED. ON THE BASIS OF A REACTION MODEL, THE OXYGEN POTENTIAL AT THE SLAG-METAL INTERFACE DURING SILICON OXIDATION IS ESTIMATED. THIS WOULD PROVIDE FUNDAMENTAL DATA ON ESTABLISHING THE STRICT DEPHOSPHORIZATION REACTION MODEL. 6. FURTHER STUDIES ARE BEING PLANNED AS NEW RESEARCH PROJECTS ON 1)DEVELOPING STRICT REACTION MODEL WHICH COULD EXPLAIN THEORETICALLY THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VARIOUS REACTIONS OCCURRING BETWEEN SLAG AND METAL AND 2)ELUCIDATING THE EFFECT OF THE BEHAVIOR OF FERRIC OXIDE ON DEPHOSPHORIZATION.
