本研究では、矛盾の認知と解決という内的過程とそこで生み出される心理的時間との関連性について検討をすゝめてきた。矛盾は、主体が自らをとりまく様々な状況とのかかわりを通して生み出してゆく認知過程である。そして、そのかかわりのなかから、主体にとっての心理的時間もまた生み出されてゆく。人はそうして自らが生み出した心理的時間の拡がりのなかで、自らの矛盾を解決へと導いてゆく。ここではそのような心理的時間を“いま"の拡がりとして捉え、88名の被調査者に24項目の矛盾事態を提示し、それぞれの矛盾事態において主体が感じている“いま"の拡がりの程度を、“いま"を中心として左側に過去、右側に未来の、秒、分、時間、日、週、月、年、世代、世紀、無限という時間単位で等間隔に目盛った直線上に表現するよう求めた。24項目の矛盾事態に対する“いま"の拡がりの評価を双対尺度法を用いて分析した結果、3つの次元をみいだした。この3次元の解釈を通して、第1の次元からは、自らの矛盾を未来指向的に解決しようとするときに、より広く拡がる“いま"が生み出されること、第2の次元からは、矛盾を矛盾として肯定的に捉えるときに、より“かかわり"の濃厚な“いま"が生み出されること、第3の次元からは、“いま"の“方向性"が解決指向性軸や矛盾成立可能性軸とは独立で、第3の次元の存在が示唆されること、が示された。
