川塩の隆盛は太平天国をきっかけにした「川塩済楚」すなわち楚岸の獲得にあり、その凋落は「楚岸縮小」にあるといわれるように、川塩と楚岸=湖北市場は緊密な関係を持つ。この市場の伸縮を、塩政上の行塩地の線ひきという政治問題としてのみ理解せず、長江貿易の一端として、経済的側面から把握を試みた。四川において、名だたる塩業家の前身は多く長江下流域からの外籍移民であること。なかに土布の販売により資本蓄積をしたもの、塩業と土布店の兼業の事例がみられることが川塩と長江交易とのかかわりを示唆する。19C末の宜昌、沙市の領事館報告において、常関経由の四川・湖北間在来交易の大宗は塩と綿花、土布の交易であることが観察されている。数値的にも1893〜95年の平均として、川塩(450萬元)と土布・綿花(414萬元)の流通額がほぼ相対になっていることが確認できた。また「文史資料」に見られる四川塩業資本家は為替取引を好まず、湖北で売った塩の対貨として綿花を購入していくことが普通であった。すなわち楚岸における川塩の伸張には、塩と綿花・土布という安定した交易圏の存在が前提としてある。この交易圏のバランスが大きく崩されていくのが重慶開港にともなう、インド製綿糸の四川への流入である。湖北綿花の代替品として四川の農村に急速に広まっていったインド綿糸は、重慶〜漢口・上海間の外貨貿易を構成するものであり、その対貨はアヘン、桐油、薬材等であった。湖北綿花の四川への移出量の低落とほぼ歩みを同じくして川塩の湖北への移入が減じている(1915〜1920)。又、このころになると海船による淮塩の沙市市場への搬入も見られるようになり、川塩楚岸の縮小は決定的になる。すなわち、楚岸の縮小とは近代的セクターによる在来交易圏の破壊に他ならなかった。
