戦前期においては、沖縄県は全国都道府県の中でも数多くの県民が世界各国に移民として渡った比率が極めて高い特徴としてあげられる。とくに、一時期はフィリピンへの移民者全体の半数以上が沖縄県出身で占められていた報告がある。しかしながら、移民の供給地としての沖縄県と需要地としてのフィリピンとの関係について、その実証的に分析した研究が極めて少ないのが現状である。そこで、本年度は基本的なアプローチとして戦前期を中心に、わが国の海外移民に関する実態把握に努め、本研究課題である沖縄県出身者の移民とフィリピンとの密接な諸要因についての移民関連資料の資料収集および聞き取り調査を行うことにした。また、沖縄県が移民として世界各国に送り出した要因を分析するためにも、当時の沖縄県における社会的、経済的、地域的な背景についても出来るだけ調べる努力を行った。その方法としては、沖縄県内の各地方自治体から発行している編纂史などを取り寄せ、地域別な特徴を把握し、さらには、関連機関が発行している資料や文献の分析に努めた。また、沖縄県に出向き、沖縄県庁や市町村、図書館などを尋ね関連資料の収集を行った。とくに、沖縄フィリピン協会での調査では、沖縄県人会が今だフィリピンでは存在し、日本人会とは別に活動していることが分かった。また、ダバオ開拓に関する文献や当時の移民に関する貴重な資料などを得ることが出来た。しかしながら、これまでの調査研究では、何故、沖縄県からフィリピンに多くの県民が移民として渡ったかについての分析は、現在の段階では、全体をまとめるには不十分である。とくに、沖縄県内の各市町村での調査と聞き取り調査による分析がもう少し必要である。
