研究課程は、ヨイチ場所における近世後期から明治初年の鰊漁業構造の展開過程とその特質を実証的に明らかにすることで、文政年間から場所請負人をつとめた林家に残され文書資料の採録、解読、分析におこなった。それによれば、(1)ヨイチ場所は、上、下に分かれ、上はヨイチ川および河口に近い海面での引網による鮭漁、下は鰊漁業が中心的な生産基盤であった。文政年間、下ヨイチ場所には運上家のほか、6カ所に番家が配置され、さらに天保年間には番家、出張などが13ケ所に増設され鰊漁の拠点となっていた。(2)番家には頭役、船頭など和人の責任者のもとに、すべてアイヌが漁夫労働力として使役されていたが、安政年間からは和人もそれに加わるようになった。(3)運上家、番家の鰊漁に従事した和人は、松前地からの出稼人は番人、現在のむつ市および大畑町を中心とする下北半島からの出稼人は稼人と称され船頭などの漁労作業の中心となっていた。(4)林家のほか、松前地から追鰊した自営の二八取りによる鰊漁もおこなわれ、その数は文政末期から天保年間には40戸前後であったが、幕末期には80数戸に増大した。(5)二八取りは、塩吹、石崎など現在の上の国町管内からの漁民が多く、なかでも塩吹村が卓越していた。(6)二八取りは、鰊漁の経営者であったが、そこに雇用される漁夫も相当数におよび安政年間には二八取りも含めて900人前後に及んだ。(7)幕末期ヨイチ場所の鰊漁獲高は1万から2万石で、このうちおよそ3割は運上家、番家、7割は二八取りによる生産高であった。また、運上家、番家の生産高のうちおよそ3割は二八役によるものであった。(8)ヨイチ場所での鰊漁業へ笊網の導入は弘化3年で、さらに漁獲効率の優れた建網が二八漁民に普及したのは安政5年以降であった。建網は、慶応2年には27ケ統であったが、翌3年には42ケ統と急増した。
