本研究の主題は西洋19-20世紀の政治社会変革と激動の時代に、西洋諸国の一般庶民、民衆が、国家・民族指導者の主導のもとに推進された政治社会変革にいかに対応し、いかなる態度、立場をとったか、を5人の共同研究者の専攻領域に即して究明することにある。研究代表者の古賀は主にイギリスのチャーティスト運動を研究主題にしており、1995年5月に『チャーティスト運動の構造』を公刊し、本研究では運動指導者とそれを支えた支持者大衆の間の問題の解明を試み、その一端として小論「チャーティスト運動とそのリーダーたち」を発表した。関連する主題として同時代のエンゲルスの歴史認識にメスを入れた論文も近日中に公刊する。分担者尼川はロシア革命におけるメンシェヴィキの研究に取り組み、本研究ではロシアの主流のメンシェヴィキから分離したグルジアのメンシェヴィキの研究に専念した。グルジアの運動家たちはなにゆえメンシュヴィズムを選択し、またその路線がなぜ民衆の圧倒的支持を得たのか、をグルジアの状況に即して解明しつつあり、近く論文「グルジア・メンシュヴィズムの形成」として公表する。分担者岩崎はマイマル期のドイツ国民の政治意識の分析をすすめ、本研究ではドイツ民主党に合流する青年ドイツ騎士団を対象にし、第一次大戦の参戦経験がナチ・イデオロギーへ結びつく要因となったことを究明しつつある。その一端は「自立的政治闘争団体と政党政治(III)」として発表した。分担者小原はアメリカ南北戦争・再建期の国家と民衆、黒人の問題の研究に務め、本研究では黒人選挙権問題の史的経過の考案と分析をすすめており、近くその一端を公表する。分担者岡本はナポレオン帝国と民衆の関係の研究に務め、その成果の一端は5月の日本西洋史学会で発表する。
