learning Cyclotron

The aim of this project is to augment and amplify human intelligence with artificial intelligence. In particular, we propose and develop Learning Cyclotron (LeCycl), a framework that monitors and actuates learning processes. In this framework, learners acquire knowledge with the following three steps: perceive (e.g., reading a textbook), master (e.g., solving an exercise), and transfer (e.g., explaining to other learners). Behaviors of learners on each step are measured by sensors. From the sensor signals, we estimate cognitive and affective states, including attention, interest, concentration, mental workload, and self-confidence. The estimated states will be utilized to select how to nudge learners. As the same as a cyclotron accelerates charged particles by a magnetic field, LeCycl circulates knowledge between learners. We involve liberal arts (ESL: English as a second language) and science (Physics) as learning subjects. After developing functions for the subjects in each country (Japan: written English, France: spoken English, Germany: Physics), we integrate them into one system. Scientific goals addressed for the development and integration are to investigate (1) how sensors can track knowledge flow from perceive to transfer, (2) what kind of nudges can be applied to circulates knowledge, and (3) whether the sensing and nudging methods can be transferred among different countries and learning subjects.
